Today people are renting storage space for more reasons than one: during relocation; to keep the home clutter-free; for storing official inventory, equipment and important official documents. People who are moving out of the country to take up foreign assignments are also using self-storage units to keep their goods in safe custody, rather than take all their goods to the new destination. However, how can you be sure that you are getting the most out of your storage space? Here are some pointers aimed to set you in the right direction:
One aspect, which helps you save on storage space and make maximum use of the space rented, is when you pack your goods properly. Use professional quality packing supplies like paper, tape, bubble wrap and plastic covers for proper protection during storage. For instance, pack the books flat and not on their spines. Mirrors, window screens and other framed items should be placed on their edges and not in a flat manner. Bubble-wrap them for extra protection.Pack the heavier appliances properly after drying and cleaning items life refrigerator, freezer, water filters, etc. You could consider placing a deodorizer to prevent foul odor and preserve freshness. All cupboards and drawers should be emptied and clothes put inside moving cartons including mothballs etc for prevention from pests, termites etc. Wherever possible disassemble large pieces of furniture and pack and store them in manageable pieces.Fragile and delicate items must be packed individually and then out inside boxes. Wrap them with bubble wrap or any soft tissue and tape the items individually. All empty spaces inside the box should be stuffed with paper shreds or crumpled paper. Try to label each box that contains fragile items and always place them on top of heavier and larger boxed. This way you are reducing chances of breakage during storage.
Store the items starting from the back of the storage space, gradually moving towards the front. In stead of filling up floor space, try to stack them up to the ceiling, with lighter boxes on top of heavier ones. Leave enough moving space within the storage unit after storing is complete.
Read the storage unit’s requirements carefully. Abide by the limitations imposed by the unit and do not store any item which is not allowed by the authorities.
Using the above guidelines can help reap maximum benefit of self storage and have the peace of mind that your goods are in safe and secure custody.
