If you gotta go, you gotta go, but there are ways to make your move more relaxing and cheaper. One of the best ways to save money and time on your move is to move during the ‘off-season’ of moving. Carefully planning your time to move at a time when it’s not the moving season allows you save money, have the best movers, and ensure that your movers are available when you need them instead of having to book them in advance.
The height of moving season is during the summer, between June and August. This is because this is when children are off from school, it’s not pouring with rain all of the time (or snowing) so it’s easier to travel, and this tends to be the spike when people are job hunting too. Another spike is at the end of months (when the rent for a new place is due and the rent for the old place is done with.) This is known as the moving season and it’s the time of year when you’ll see a lot of vacancies in apartments and a lot of for sale signs on houses. Another smaller spike is when university students begin moving around-in April and May, students begin to move and this means that there are more apartments freed up, whereas come August and September, it’s a lot harder to find apartments because they’re filled with university/college students.
The best time to move, if you have the chance to move, is during the early spring or even winter if you can manage it. This is when fewer people are moving which means that you’ll have greater options for movers. You may also find/negotiate better prices and have a greater quality of service since the movers won’t be rushed or harried going from job to job. Moving in this season of course has its own hazards, but at least the moving process itself will be easier on you and your pocketbook.
